uumate is a free, fast, live and bootable computer operating system based on the Ubuntu MATE distribution of Linux. As expected, uumate is built around the MATE graphical desktop environment, but includes a great selection of open source software packages.
Distributed as a dual-arch Live DVD
The distro is available for download as a dual-arch Live DVD ISO image that has approximately 2.5 GB in size and includes software packages optimized for both 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (x86) computers.
Being a hybrid ISO image, users will be able to write it on either a blank, single-layer DVD disc using any CD/DVD burning software on any operating system, or on a USB flash drive of 4GB or higher capacity, which can be used to boot the operating system from the BIOS of the PC.
Boot options à la Ubuntu MATE
While the Live DVD will automatically start the live system without user interaction, it comes with a boot menu, which includes the ability to test your computer’s RAM (system memory) for errors, to boot an existing operating system that is installed on a local drive, as well as to start the graphical installer directly and replace your existing OS (not recommended). Being an Ubuntu MATE clone, the boot menu looks similar with the one of the upstream distribution.
The MATE desktop looks traditional, familiar
The green MATE desktop environment used in this distribution look really good, providing users with a traditional and familiar layout comprised of a single panel located on the bottom edge of the screen.
While the panel includes all the applets that you’ll ever need, on the desktop you can find ready-to-use word, excel and presentation documents, the graphical installer, My Computer, Home directory, network servers and a text file that must be read before attempting to install the OS.
Default applications
Default applications includes the Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox web browsers, LibreOffice office suite, GNOME Commander two-pane file manager, Darktable RAW image editor, GIMP image editor, XnView, Shotwell and gThumb image viewers, Transmission torrent downloader, Skype VoIP client, Steam for Linux client, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, and Clementine audio player.
The official Dropbox, BitTorrent and MEGA sync clients, FileZilla file transfer client, TeamViewer remote desktop client, the Wine project for installing Windows applications, Ubuntu Software Center and Synaptic Package Manager apps for installing additional software, a great selection of entertaining games, as well as all the default MATE utilities are also included.
